Intra-industry trade

Hi,

Can anyone clearly and in detail explain to me about intra-industry trade and more specific the Grubel-Lloyd index? I know how to calculate the index, but I mean what is the actual meaning when it is higher to one or zero?
Which factors influence intra-industry trade?
Why is it important for economics?

Thanks!

@edwardvdp,
Study Boeing Airplane Company. They're a good example of intra-industry trade.
