Copyright infringement issues aside, the album itself....genius, or just a clever experiment with more notoriety than actual substance? I'm still undecided.
I'll admit up front I'm no rap/hi-hop fan. That said, The Grey Album stands as a great example of the reasoning behind my opinion of the genres, which are characterized by about as much genious and creativity as is a ready-to-heat microwave meal-in-a-bowl. They are to music what a sidewalk is to classical sculpture.
I don't really condemn the rap/hip hop genre as a whole. There is a ton of stuff I actually quite like, but this album just sounds like absolute full rip-offs of two albums sewn together by mighty flimsy thread.
if you want to see this kind of thing done better, check out this site by the kleptones, they have produced an album called "a night at the hip hopera", utilizing samples from various queen songs, they also have a mix of the flaming lips called "yoshimi battles the hip hop robots', they're both pretty good
