Have you ever heard a song that you hated so many times that you actually grew to like it?
This is begining to happen to me with country music. When people asked me what kind of music I listened to I would always say, "Everything but Country." Then I got married and my wife discovered country music. So of course whenever we are in the car her tastes in music trumps mine so country gets played. It was driving me crazy. It seemed like they play the same ten songs over and over and over again. But soon a strange thing started happening... I was singing along. I would recognize songs and think, "well this one isn't to bad." Now I actually like when certain songs come on. What's happening to me?
The lines between hate and love of country music are blurred even more with Alt Country groups like Son Volt and Wilco. I could seriously listen to Son Volt every day of therest of my life and not get bored with it... it is taht good. So now when I am asked what kind of music I listen to I just say, "Oh, a little bit of everything."
Damn...I hated Country music for years, but need I say I discovered the Johnny Cash catalogue, Lyle Lovett, and Hank Williams Sr.? I listen to everything these days, as long as it's quality material.
You ever hear any Son Volt? I can't stop listening to it. It just puts me in a good mood.
I'm not familiar with Son Volt, but I'll look them up.
Thew Cowboy Junkies were acquaintances of mine back when they were still an indie band. They are really nice people, and I love their music.
Check out either their Trace or Straightaways albumns... darn good.
I love The Cowboy Junkies version of "Sweet Jane" and was addicted to listening to it for a time.
I love Patsy Cline and Ray Charles singing country and I like a lot of country swing stuff like "Asleep At The Wheel".
Yup. If you told me 5 years ago that I would grow to like classical music, I would have laughed, but here I am listening to it all the time. I still love my country, and all the other stuff I listen to here and there, but classical has become my music of choice.
i've always liked a wide variety of music, however the company i work for recently installed a sound system and they play this godawful innocuous pop music all day, it's horrible
I've said this on other threads. The reason I like country music so much is because the songs(some of them) are little vignettes of good prose and the melodies are so hummable. But it has to be said that Nashville's control of the product has really stifled new artists so we get a lot of regurgitation.
I have always loved country music from childhood. But most of the newest country is presented in a drone that keeps me disinterested. No matter how good the voice or well written the lyrics it simply doesn't grab me. Give me early Don Gibson, Johnny Horton, Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, George Jones and the like and I am as Mike Tyson puts it, "estatic."
Maybe this has to be more with the changes of being a teen, but I never thought that I'd like Cuban music. Now I'm learning trova on the guitar and taking salsa lessons.
