Does thinking about suicide make you suicidal?

Does thinking about suicide necessarily make you suicidal? I've always worried that if I didn't have family who would be sad that I would do it and if it wasn't for them I think I would, replies appreciated

@secondaccount123456,
I don't think so. I'm very sure that way more people have thought about it than even made a first attempt.

@secondaccount123456,
Depends on the reason one thinks about it.

1. If it's curiosity, research, etc. - not necessarily suicidal.

2. Wanting out of this life for some reason - Probably suicidal.

You sound like a 2. Why?

There is what is referred to as suicidal ideation. Generally, ideation does not mean you are suicidal. You are suicidal if you have a plan, are making an attempt or actively seeking to place yourself in a position to complete the suicide.

Having said this, constantly thinking about it is not conducive to good mental health.

By saying that the only thing stopping you is family says you need to seek help with your life problems and stress management to reduce the negative thoughts.

And remember, suicide is a PERMANENT solution to a temporary problem.

@secondaccount123456,
Are you getting help? Depression is a treatable problem, often all it takes is a little help talking through the things that are keeping you from enjoying the good things in life. You might consider finding a good therapist.

I also agree with Guijohn. There are many stages in life. If things are difficult now, it doesn't mean that things won't be easier and more enjoyable later.

@giujohn,
I always say that whatever I'm feeling is always wait a day, because it's permanent and that was fine when it was every other day I was worrying about stuff but it's starting to get to every day now.
Thanks for your reply was helpful

@Leadfoot,
Other posts I've done mention worries about anxiety/uni etc that I've only put up not that long ago( and was my first time daring to say anything in years) sort of explain this better. I've always said when I feel really really bad I'll wait and see the day after what I feel like which has been working for months but now it's getting less like every other day to most days. As said it's cos of impact on family that I wouldn't so was just curious to hear what people think
Thanks for your reply

@secondaccount123456,
I have found talk therapy to be helpful, and safe. You can talk to them as you want, and you can stop at any time. A good therapist will ask what you want, and they understand that they can help guide you... but the real process is what you want to change in your life.

It wouldn't hurt to spend an hour with a therapist. If you don't like it, you can choose to not go back. And you can shop around, trying out different therapists until you find one who works for you.

The best part of a therapist is that they aren't emotionally involved in your life. This means they can help you talk through things in a way that friends and families can't.

I found it helpful when I was going through a difficult time. Most of what my therapist did is listen to me talk about what was bothering me and asked questions... sometimes his questions helped me to see where my thinking about emotions wasn't rational or clear. Sometimes just the process of having to express my emotions to someone else in a non-emotional way helped me to better understand them.

You might find it helpful too. It is not as scary as you might think

Having read your other post...you may be bipolar. You would need to see your doctor to make sure it isn't for instance a thyroid condition. But if you are bipolar it can be managed with mood stabilizers or other meds.

@secondaccount123456,
'Waiting a day' is good strategy for the short term but not a solution.

This isn't a professional opinion but it is one from experience. There is one minimum requirement for wanting to go on existing:

Something to look forward to.

If you don't have that, suicidal thoughts are inevitable. Obligation to family might keep you 'here' but a miserable life is no solution either. There are people living long lives who look forward to nothing more significant that tomorrow's breakfast. Whatever you find, it must be something good enough for you.

It might take a therapist to help you find it, but either way, happy hunting.

"Symptoms- feel like I'm watching myself from above sometimes, when walking feel like I've just come off a treadmill, leg shaking when nervous, physically sick on morning if nervous/exited, really really sad at times then something good happens and I'm overly exited and feel shaky"

You have also referred to the episodic nature of various symptoms.

Your symptoms could be the result of a neurochemical imbalance or it could be as I stated before something related to a thyroid condition such as hyperthyroidism. My suggestion is to seek out medical assistance and advice.

@giujohn,
Be careful about diagnosing yourself (I think Giujohn would agree). Bipolar disorder is something that should be assessed and treated by a doctor, there are other conditions with similar symptoms.

A talk therapist is usually not a doctor, but they have training that will help them refer you to a doctor if you need one, and support you in getting what you need to see the doctor. I don't want to push you, but my strong suggestion is to start with a therapist.

@maxdancona,
I agree, neither she nor I are capable of making any confirmed diagnosis. However I think the best course of action for her is to first seek out a medical doctor's advice as a way of triaging her situation because if it is a medical condition that should be addressed first and foremost. Then if all other medical conditions are ruled out a referral can be made for therapy.

@giujohn,
Either talking to a therapist or a medical doctor about these feelings would be a positive step forward toward feeling better. I think we are in agreement, John.
