Private free Mac-compatible chat room?

Hi,

I regularly chat with my cousin. She has a paranoia of IM, doesn't want to download Yahoo Messenger or AIM. So I set up an MSN group to chat with her. That worked fine.

Well, I hadn't tried to get in to it since I moved over to my Mac, and evidently I can't chat with OS X. The old computer is disconnected from the modem and would be a giant hassle to set it up again.

Any suggestions for a place I could go to chat with her, privately?

Thanks.

This is what it says when I try to chat on the MSN site:

Quote:
MSN Chat System Requirements

MSN Chat is not currently compatible with your Internet browser and/or computer operating system.

Here's what you need to enjoy MSN Chat:

Windows 95 or later
At this time, MSN Chat does not work on Macintosh, Windows 3.1, Windows NT 3.1, and Unix Operating systems.

Internet Explorer 4.0 or later
You can download the latest version for free at:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie.

- or -

Netscape Navigator 4.x
To find out more, go to: http://home.netscape.com.

I have Safari.

Would it be an option for the two of you to download the standalone MSN messenger? It's free, and it's available for Macs. You can download it from this site. (Edit: OK, stupid question. I hadn't noticed she dislikes instant messaging in general, not just the specific programs you listed.)

Theoretically, it may be possible to persuade MSN to talk to your non-IE browser. But this would require that you download the source code of an Open-Source browser like Mozilla, modify it to make the program lie to the MSN site about what type of browser it is and what operating system it is running on, then recompile. This might be a neat project if you wanted to teach yourself some hacking skills. But I imagine you don't want to, and in this case it's too difficult to be worth it.

Good luck!

Thanks for the leads, Thomas.

Hmm, I may have to convince her to just download some chat software already.

You're welcome! And here's a list of free, private chatrooms that looks helpful, though I have no idea if it actually is. (Just in case you're that boring kind of type who wants answers to the questions she actually asked. Wink )

Fire hooks up with all IM protocalls including MSN. Use this.

or this:

or this:

All of these are open source MSN clients. I use Fire.
