We had the rare opportunity to visit and learn about the Head Temple buildings such as the Mieido, Mutsubo, Kyakuden as well as nearby temples, Myorenji and Shimonobo.
Is a comma needed after temples?

I would say
and in front of Kyakuden and put a comma after it as well.
