I live in Texas on the Guadalupe River. I have a tree that is hanging about 90 % over the river. It has started to rot and people are climbing and jumping off. I am afraid someone will get hurt. Can I cut the tree down and let it fall into the river? There is about a 15' hole where the tree will fall.

@sudie52,
You should check on local ordinances regarding this. . There may be a law against just letting the tree flop into the river.

@sudie52,
If it was my tree, I would cut it a little at a time in short pieces, and let them float away.

@sudie52,
Find out why local laws/bylaws apply.

Here, you can only cut trees over a certain size after getting a permit from the city. The fines for cutting/damaging a tree without a permit range up to $100,000.
