Hi

Can someone please help. I have a advert bar appear at the bottom and a smaller one appear just below the address bar every time I start IE. It does not go until I log on again. Followed all the instruction in your article Spyware, Browser Hijacks, or other Yuckware? Check here 1st.
The only part that did not seem to work is CoolWWWsearch.SmartKiller removal tool kept saying "CoolWWWsearch.SmartKiller not found on system". The only other info I can give is if i right click on the bar on properties it gives the URL http://lop.com/passthrough/newpass2.html

Thanks in advance for any help

Here is my HijackThis log

Hi wilma and welcome to A2K
Quote:
The only part that did not seem to work is CoolWWWsearch.SmartKiller removal tool kept saying "CoolWWWsearch.SmartKiller not found on system".

This is good, It did work,

First
Go to Add/Remove programs, ( Click Start, Click Settings, Click Control Panel, Click Add/Remove Programs ) Remove "Spyware Begone" and "Messenger Plus!"
Restart your computer
Next
Please go Here and unzip the newest version of HJT into a new dedicated folder,
Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it hjt.
Unzip HijackThis into this folder. "Remove the old version from here C:\Documents and Settings\Paul\Desktop\HijackThis.exe "

Next
Rescan with Ad-aware
CHECK FOR UPDATES

Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Scanning Engine:

check: "Unload recognized processes during scanning."

- Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Cleaning Engine:

Check: "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."

Press "Scan Now"

- Check option "Use Custom scanning options"

- Check option "Activate In-Depth Scan"

- Press "Select drives\folders to scan"

- Select the active partition which is usually C:

Now press "Next" to let Ad-aware scan your drives...

It will find a number of "bad" files and registry keys.

Right-click in that pane and choose "select all"

Now press "Next" again.

It will ask you whether you'd like to remove all checked items. Click OK."
Restart your computer again,
Next
Restart HJT and post back a fresh log please

Thanks for your help
First thanks for your prompt response. I had already disabled the smaller top bar. Followed your clear instructions and the second large advert bar at the bottom has gone. I had been at for about 10 hours on this! Started again at 6am this morning (need some sleep!)
Learnt a lot lurking around in here and majorgeeks so thanks for your help.
Out interest do you know what caused this? My only idea is my 14 year old son (bless him! - last seen hanging from the window 2nd storey!) accepted a file from a friend to get Messenger Plus. He won't be doing again!!

I have only logged on as me so assume I am now clean?

Once again thanks for your help it is great to know there are many experts out there to fight against the *astards that create spyware.

What has happened to spywareinfo.com seems to been down for sometime. Been using for about 6 months after a friend of mine had some nasty popup porn every time he started IE6. Ended up reinstalling windows XP as he had only had the PC a month.

One other thing in desperation I had purchased Noadware. Ad-aware 6 when I scanned had 2 items in the noadware folder. Should I carry on using it or get rid of it?

Here is my Hijack log.

Best Regards

Paul

Out interest do you know what caused this? My only idea is my 14 year old son (bless him! - last seen hanging from the window 2nd storey!) accepted a file from a friend to get Messenger Plus. He won't be doing again!!

You didn't hear this from me, But yes thats what it is from,
You can download messenger plus, but just don't download all the crap with it,
Basically they tell you they are installing the crap on your computer

What has happened to spywareinfo.com seems to been down for sometime

Says its under construction. and has been for a while, I m sure it will be back up soon

One other thing in desperation I had purchased Noadware. Ad-aware 6 when I scanned had 2 items in the noadware folder. Should I carry on using it or get rid of it?

Its a shame you purchased it, Ad-aware does a much better job and is free,
I would stick with Ad-aware and Spybot, and of course CWS,
And I can see your running spywaregaurd and blaster,
which is a good thing,
Anyway, your log looks clean now,
And your very welcome, Pull the Kid back in an hour or so Laughing
