Norman Mailer Turns 80

The perennial bad boy of American literature is now its Grand Old Man. Mailer's career began in the Forties with THE NAKED AND THE DEAD and continues to this day, as he is still writing and publishing. Among my favorite Mailer books are THE DEER PARK, ADVERTISEMENTS FOR MYSELF, AN AMERICAN DREAM, THE EXECUTIONER'S SONG, and his CIA epic HARLOT'S GHOST. He'll never win a Nobel, which is a pity, since he deserves one more than plenty of those who have before.

He's calmed down considerably, but you just may be right! He was on Charlie Rose the other night.

I wish I had seen Mailer on Charlie Rose, even though Charlie is my least favorite interviewer. Did he say anything interesting???

Larry, it is archived here - you can listen to it, no picture

Charlie Rose Archives

Its at January 29, 2003 -

"Author Norman Mailer talks with Charlie Rose about his new book "The Spooky Art: Some Thoughts on Writing" and career accomplishments."
Its a nice mix of whats happening today in politics, and reflections on his career.

If you don't mind being on a daily e-mail list, there is one for Rose - I usually forget to check to see who is on Charlie Rose, and that is when I miss someone interesting. The e-mail is a reminder of who is on every night.

Larry:

Thanks for the Charlie Rose link but I don't have the software to listen to the archived interview, nor do i want to buy it just for this purpose. As I said, Charlie Rose is not my favorite interviewer!

Larry, I understand about Charlie Rose. The software is free and automatically installs itself.

Larry, if you have CSPAN2 on cable, Norman Mailer is on BOOKTV this weekend, Sunday morning at 9:30 EST. It is a 90 minute interview before an audience, and its a very good show.
