This was a great song, made doubly great by the remake of Battlestar Galactica (which used it as a key element in their second-to-last season), which then utterly failed to conclude their story in any reasonable or entertaining fashion, thus dragging all things associated with it back down to earth and into the dirt. Other than that, it's a great song.
Dylan made som great individual lines. However, when he tried to string them together, they became what was known as "The Great Mind ****"
Watchtower is one of them songs. Hendrix made that tune with all his shredding style. Without HWndrix, the song wouldnt exist in memory.

Like many true poems, the lyrics paint a picture and evoke emotion. But it's not something that can be rewritten as a treatise or even fiction. You either appreciate it or don't
Some of Dylan's songs compress whole novels or news stories into a tight package. His songs are so many and they vary so much that you can find examples of poor writing but the best ones cannot be surpassed by a Kristofferson.
A man I worked with for about ten years knew 50s style pop music and country. He had been a ballroom dance instructor in another life. He took notice of some 50s and early 60s rock, when I persisted in listening to it. It was obvious he had not paid heed to any of it before we became friends. One day the radio station played the Marcels version of Blue Moon. He had just gotten through saying no rock singers had screwed with that one. One day, around Christmas time, I told him that a store in town had all black ornaments, commemorating The Grateful Dead. He was genuinely shocked. "The Grateful Dead?" he repeated three or four times. I had to explain they were a singing group. I guess, if there is a point to this, it is that we all have our memories and prejudices, in music as anything else. I never allowed others' preferences to influence my likes and I never begrudged others their own favorites.
