Does this make sense --- we had two cars insured. A 2001 and a 2014 Honda Accord. When my daughter got her license we changed the older Honda with limited collision as it was so old and had her exempt from the newer Honda. It was a big difference in insurance premiums seeing she is an inexperienced driver.

Just got a new car as I was driving the old Honda and it is much better suited for local driving (in case with its old age it stops working) and now my daughter has a way to get to school and work, etc. We put the new car on our insurance and asked the agent the amount of premiums for the new car both with and without her on the car --- amount the same. Huh? So I ask why is that -- her answer that this what the system shows. Huh? So why does the system show that? I don't know that is just what it tells me.

I say that is not an appropriate answer to tell a customer if you do not know how the system works someone at your office should have an understanding of how insurance premiums work. She said she would put my request in and I have not heard back ---

But is that an appropriate way to answer - that is what the system says? Do people just take that with face value and say ok - it doesn't make sense, but if the computer tells me that it must be right? Have we lost our common sense abilities?

@Linkat,
Have you made your daughter an excluded driver on the new car?

I know that in our jurisdiction, just having your daughter in the household would lead to an increase to the premium - unless she is specifically excluded on the policy.

@ehBeth,
That is what I am saying - if we exclude her on the new car the premium doesn't change.

maybe the agent didn't understand that you meant to specifically exclude your daughter on the policy - in a number of jurisdictions exclusion has a legal meaning beyond "not on the policy", i.e. there have to be documents signed by your daughter acknowledging that she knows she wouldn't be covered if she was ever found to have driven the new car. If she simply isn't listed on the policy, she could still drive it without too much legal trouble.

(putting this in here in case someone who doesn't understand insurance comes across your question)

@ehBeth,
Ok I decided to call them again and actually got an agent that knew what she was doing. She thought it was weird at first too. But then saw I had a "major" accident. What major accident - it was a fender bender at 10 miles per hour. Only damage to my car. Ok it ended up being more than $5k so it is considered a major accident and get higher points and a surcharge with replacing fender (told you it was just a fender) and painting and car rental. I said you add in car rental? They automatically put the person with the most points on the most expensive car.

So because they put me on as primary because for the most expensive car and with the surcharge of the accident my daughter doesn't add anything to premium of the more expensive car.

So because of a fender bender 4 years ago - it doesn't cost her any more to be on the more expensive car (now the cheaper car - in between Honda- it would cost more).

And Mass does not allow the one accident forgiveness clause.
