Am I using semi-colons correctly in these examples?
Often times, patients simply need somebody to talk to; somebody to listen to their stories; somebody to make them laugh.
He spoke with one man about his trip to Florida; asked another woman about how her grandchildren were doing; complimented a young boy on the new shoes that he was wearing proudly.
Near as I can tell, commas would work.

Semicolons are not necessary in either sentence. Commas would be fine.

Exactly. And you're a proof reader by trade.
I always held to the belief that a semi colon is used to separate two sentences which even though they make sense in their own would be better if they became one.
Here's an example from the net.
You should stop eating so much food; you will have to go on a diet.
This could be two sentences, but as they're closely linked a semi colon is preferable.
