Hi?
I watched the movie '21', and this line got me curious.
A boy, lost in remembering what he went through in the past, utters,
'I scored the prettiest girl in school.'
It wasn't quite hard to get the general meaning of it
from the context, as the boy and the girl was hugging and kissing each other.
What I'd like to know is, it may sound weird, what extent it exactly means.
An online dictionary defines the word as the following.
1. to get laid
to get laid: the ultimate GOAL of most teenagers. Hence the term score
Well she bent down to get a quarter she dropped, and I went in for the score.
2. to succeed in seducing someone sexually
All you have to do is impress one another to score, or you'll have to settle for a cheapshot.
Native speakers also have very interesting expressions,
First base, second, third and home run, right?
Now, when I said I went out with a girl, people wouldn't necessarily regard
that I had sex with the girl, am I right?
What about 'scoring someone'?
According to the dictionary I looked up to,
the word seems to have more explicit and sexual connotation :
get laid, seduce sexually.
Does 'score someone ', unlike 'go out with someone', remind you of sex?
I believe this use of the verb to score to mean 'obtain or gain possession of' comes originally from beatnik/hippie slang, where it meant to succeed in obtaining illegal drugs from a dealer.
Also, the original meaning of the verb 'score' in this sense, which the beatnik term inherits, includes the idea of competitive success in an endeavour, e.g. in a game or examination. A team scores e.g. a goal against another, opposing team; a junkie scores some drugs against the opposition of circumstances such the need for furtiveness, scarcity of the drug, difficulty of finding a dealer etc. To score the prettiest girl in school implies beating the competition of other ambitious boys.
@Tes yeux noirs,
Thank you. So, it's more about beating the competition, against all odds,
not so much about how far they go. Now I see. Thank you a million.

In a Western society, if you were a school age teenager, not necessarily, if you were an adult, they probably would assume that sex was part of the package.
