Regressed / Digressed

So, on a forum where everyone thinks they know everything and grammar police abound, I've received a couple of replies on an original post that read something to the effect of: GoT has digressed into LoTR.

I then changed it to: In MY opinion, GoTs writing has digressed from its beginning seasons and now many of the scenes strongly resemble LoTR scenes.

What if anything am I doing wrong by using digressed rather than regressed since I thought digressed was to reverse or go back, particularly in written form.

@MadManAlex,

a temporary departure from the main subject in speech or writing.
"let's return to the main topic after that brief digression"

Quote:
re·gres·sion

a return to a former or less developed state.

they've got quite different meanings

I think you've used the definition of regression and applied it to digression

@MadManAlex,
Regress means to go back. Digress means to wander off the main subject.

Thanks. I was wrong then. (Practically NEVER happens). ;p

Thank you for the help. The post has now been corrected to:

Edited to appease everyone, including those who like the show, love the show, hate the show, are indifferent about the show, don't feel anything for the show at this time, but are thinking about it; grammar Nazis, grammar police, grammar patrols, grammar patriots, grammar strippers, grammar grandmothers and grammar dogs and cats; those who loved the books, hated the books, were indifferent about the books, never read the books, those who are thinking about reading the books and those who never want to see the books; those who agree, those who disagree, those that think they agree but really don't, those that think they disagree, but really don't, those that don't agree, but really do, those that think they are going to agree and then don't, those that don't disagree but inside, really do, those that do disagree but inside really don't; those who have replied, those who have not yet replied, and for good measure those that may not ever reply.

In MY opinion, and pardon me if I digress, GoTs writing has regressed from its beginning seasons and now many of the scenes strongly resemble LoTR scenes.

Disclaimers:

I do not hate GoT. I do not hate LoTR. I like LoTR. I like GoT.

Apologies to those who I may have forgotten to include. Drop me a PM and I will do so at my earliest convenience. (Really, don't).

[cheers]

@MadManAlex,
It happens.

I hope nobody was too cranky about it.

and now many of the scenes strongly resemble LoTR scenes.

It's this added part of the compound sentence that doesn't match the use of digress or regress.

You are comparing two different things, so one cannot regress into something else or digress into something unrelated, IMHO.

Use "morph."
