Hello,

Does anybody knows what this thing is? How to get rid of it?

Whenever I mistype an url a webpage with this logo http://static.appliedsemantics.com/images/epa/epa_shnv9884_86_logo.gif

pops up with their own search directory. So annoying. I uninstalled this thing several times. Contacted them. No go.
I am not posting the link to the webpage itself as I don't know you might get infected with thing.

Want to report them to someone. BBB?

Yup. Its a browser highjacker.

Download and install Spybot Search&Destroy. Do not run its scan yet. Read the Tutorial and then Update Spybot. Once you have updated it, close the application. Now, download and install AdAware, and update it, using its "Search for Updates" function.

If you are running WinME or WinXP, Disable System Restore. Note: you will lose your previous restore points, so firast be sure your system is operating properly apart from your browser woes.

Once both programs have been installed and updated, go to Windows Update, and get your Windows and your browser fully updated.

Finally, download, to a folder of its own on your C:\ drive (right-click ""My Computer", select "Open", then select and open your "C" drive folder, then select "File", then "New", then "Folder", and name the folder something easy to remember, like "HJT") HiJack This. Don't use it yet, just stick it on your C:\ drive.

With that accomplished, disconnect from the internet, then restart your machine in Safe Mode. Do not reconnect to the internet untill all the following have been done.

Go to Start > Programs > Spybot Search & Destroy. Open the program, select "Search For Problems" and let it run its scan ... which will take a while. When it has completed its first scan, have it "Fix" everything it found. It is possible it will tell you it needs to run again at next boot to complete repairs. If so, reboot normally and let it run again; it will start itself before any other applications. In any event, run the scan at least twice, or untill it comes up clean.

Now, reboot back into safe mode and run AdAware, again letting it fix anything it finds, and again run it at least twice, once in safe mode and again in normal mode, or untill it comes up clean.

Boot once more into safe mode. Empty your cache (Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Delete Cookies > OK, then > Delete Files > Delete all Offline Content > OK > Apply > OK), then navigate to your main drive's (usually "C:\") folder and delete all content inside the "Temp" folder ... just the files inside, not the folder itself, then open your Windows folder, find the Temp folder there, and again delete all of its contents but do not delete the folder itself). Some files may put up a fight, but do what you can and we'll deal with the rest later. Now would be a good time to defrag you system, too, while still in safe mode and with everything freshly emptied ... recommended, but your call.

Before reconnecting to the internet, boot normally and run HijackThis, selecting only "Scan", and when that has finished, "Save Log". The log will open in Notepad; save that, then close HiJack This. Reconnect to the internet, and without doing any other browsing, navigate back to this thread and paste the log.
