Edgar sure comes up with some esoteric stuff, doesn't he?

Hi Letty!

I can't believe I'm doing this.....

Listen children to a story
That was written long ago
'Bout a kingdom on a mountain
And a valley far below
--? (One Tin Soldier)

For those who fancy coloring books
As certain people do
Here's a new one for you
A most unusual coloring book
The kind you never see
Crayons ready, very well
Begin to color me
These are the eyes that watched him
As he walked away
Color them gray
This is the heart that thought
He would always be true
Color it blue
These are the arms that held him
And touched him then lost him somehow
Color them empty now
These are the beads I wore
Until she came between
Color them green
This is the room I sleep in
Walk in and weep in
Hiding that nobody sees
Color it lonely, please
This is the man
The one I depended upon
Color him gone...

Today as I was walking
In the fields just down the way
I sat down on a fallen log
To pass the time away

And as I looked around me
The more that I did look
the more I realize that I am viewing
God's coloring book

I saw a golden ray of sunlight
A silver drop of dew
A soft, white floating cloud
Sailing cross the sky 'a blue

A yellow dandelion
Pretty evergreen
And some red and orange flowers
Growing wild along the stream

And the more I look around me
And the more that I do look
The more I realize that I am viewing
God's coloring book

The grain and sand in old man's hair
The pink in BeeBee's cheeks
The blackness in a stormy sky
The brown in fallen leaves

And the multicolored rainbow
Stretched out across the sky
And the purple haze at sunset
Just before the night

And the more I look around me
And the more that I do look
The more I realize that I am viewing
God's coloring book

Then I turn my face toward the sky
And say a silent prayer
Though God doesn't speak to me
I see him everywhere

He is all around me
He's everywhere I look
And each new day is but a new page
In God's coloring book

Each new day is but a new page
In God's coloring book

Hmmmmmm

There was a time you and I were everything
You'll never know the days and nights
I spend imagining
Yesterday is the only place
We'll ever know oh oh
In my little black book
There's someone I used to know
Day by day time slips away
Where did our love go
In my little black book
You're always there to remind me
It wasn't just a dream
And baby in my heart you will always be
Picked up the phone
Didn't know
What I was gonna do
I heard your voice
I had no choice
I hang up on you
Yesterday is the only place
We'll ever know oh oh
In my little black book
There's someone I used to know
Day by day time slips away
Where did our love go
In my little black book
You're always there to remind me
How it used to be
But baby in my heart
You're still a part of me
There's no future living in the past
You can dream but you can never go back
Oh no you will always be there
In my little black ... in my little black book
There's someone I used to know
Day by day time slips away
Where did our love go
In my little black book
You're always there to remind me
It wasn't just a dream
We're worlds apart
You're in my heart
And there you'll always be
In my little black book
There's someone I used to know
Day by day time slips away
Where did our love go
In my little black book
You'll always be
A part of me
You always be
In my little black book

Daddy daddy come and look
And see what I have found
A little way away from here
While digging in the ground

Come away Melinda
Come in and close the door
It's nothing but a picture book
They had before the war

Daddy daddy come and see
Oh daddy come and look
There's four or five Melinda girl
Inside this picture book

Come away Melinda
Come in and close the door
There were lots of little girls like you
Before they had the war

Daddy daddy come and see
Oh daddy hurry do
There's someone in villages
Who's all grown up like you

Come away Melinda
Come in and close the door
That someone is a mother
Like you had before the war

Daddy daddy come and see
Such things I've never seen
Happy faces all along
And all the ground is green

Come away Melinda
Come in and close the door
It's just the way it used to be
Before they had the war

Daddy daddy come and see
And tell me if you can
Why can't it be the way it was
Before the war began

Come away Melinda
Come in and close the door
The answer lies in yesterday
Before they had the war

Long time ago in Bethlehem,
so the Holy Bible say,
Mary's boy child Jesus Christ,
was born on Christmas Day.

Hark, now hear the angels sing, a new king born today,
and man will live for evermore, because of Christmas day.
Trumpets sound and angels sing, listen to what they say,
that man will live for evermore, because of Christmas Day.

While shepherds watch their flocks by night,
them see a bright new shining star,
them hear a choir sing,
the music seemed to come from afar.

Hark, now hear the angels sing, a new king born today,
and man will live for evermore, because of Christmas day.
Trumpets sound and angels sing, listen to what they say,
that man will live for evermore, because of Christmas Day.

Now Joseph and his wife, Mary,
come to Bethlehem that night,
them find no place to born the child,
not a single room was in sight.

Hark, now hear the angels sing, a new king born today,
and man will live for evermore, because of Christmas day.
Trumpets sound and angels sing, listen to what they say,
that man will live for evermore, because of Christmas Day.

By and by they find a little nook
in a stable all forlorn,
and in a manger cold and dark,
Mary's little boy was born.

Hark, now hear the angels sing, a new king born today,
and man will live for evermore, because of Christmas day.
Trumpets sound and angels sing, listen to what they say,
that man will live for evermore, because of Christmas Day.

Wow! boomer. No problem. I've forgotten where we are. I'm trying to remember the lyrics to "I'd like to give my dog to Uncle Sam.."

goes something like:

I'd like to give my dog to Uncle Sam.
You see sir I'm a blind boy,
Yes I am.

I'd like to do my part,
To show what's in my heart..etc..etc.

Not making fun..just trying to figure out what makes America tick..all of us, I guess

one from the smiths
Cemetary Gates

A dreaded sunny day
so I meet you at the cemetery gates
Keats and Yeats are on your side

A dreaded sunny day
so I meet you at the cemetery gates
Keats and Yeats are on your side
while Wilde is on mine

So we go inside and we gravely read the stones
all those people all those lives
where are they now?
with the loves and hates
and passions just like mine
they were born
and then they lived and then they died
seems so unfair
and I want to cry

You say: "ere thrice the sun done salutation to the dawn"
and you claim these words as your own
but I've read well, and I've heard them said
a hundred times, maybe less, maybe more

If you must write prose and poems
the words you use should be your own
don't plagiarise or take "on loans"
there's always someone, somewhere
with a big nose, who knows
and who trips you up and laughs
when you fall
who'll trip you up and laugh
when you fall

You say: "ere long done do does did"
words which could only be your own
and then you then produce the text
from whence was ripped some dizzy whore, 1804

A dreaded sunny day
so let's go where we're happy
and I meet you at the cemetery gates
Oh Keats and Yeats are on your side

A dreaded sunny day
so let's go where we're wanted
and I meet you at the cemetery gates
Keats and Yeats are on your side
but you lose because Wilde is on mine

The Beautiful South
My Book

This is my life and this is how it reads
For every chapter, a thousand memories
A murder, a mystery where everybody bleeds
A fantasy, a thriller with romance and disease
Diary entry 9th of May '62
We've had some ugly babies but none were quite like you
Diary entry '62 end of May
It looks as if the nose and chin are definiteley here to stay
They're here to stay, they're here to stay
If my lips start smiling and my knees start a-knocking
I'm a failure
You are, you are
And if I seem half-hearted, it's because I'm broken hearted
And I'm a failure
You are, you are, you are (I am)
You are, you are, you are (I am)
This is my life and this is how it reads
A documentary that nobody believes
Albert Steptoe in 'Gone with the Breeze'
Mother played by Peter Beardsley, father by John Cleese
Diary entry '68 end of the year
A cardboard Apollo 6 has given the all clear
11th December '68 Captain's log
Proposed trip to Mars is cancelled due to fog
It's due to fog, it's due to fog
If my lips start smiling and my knees start a-knocking
I'm a failure
You are, you are
And if I seem half-hearted, it's because I'm broken hearted
And I'm a failure
You are, you are, you are (I am)
You are, you are, you are (I am)
This is the play, it was I who wrote the script
Terry meets June in 'Tales from the Crypt'
It was going to be a film but the camera person slipped
They later found him scolding a banana
Diary entry 10th of April '89
The world is going mad but me I'm doing fine
I'm doing fine
Back to bed, back to reality
Just fine.

more from The Smiths
Frankly Mr. Shankly

"Frankly, Mr. Shankly, this position I've held
It pays my way and it corrodes my soul
Oh, I didn't realize that you wrote poetry
(I didn't realize you wrote such bloody awful poetry)"

Ask

"Spending warm Summer days indoors
Writing frightening verse
To a buck-toothed girl in Luxembourg"

Bright Eyes
Waste of Paint

"So I have been hanging out down by the train's depot. No, I don't ride.
I just sit and watch the people there. They remind me of wind up cars in motion.
The way they spin and turn and jockey for positions.
And I want to scream out that it is all nonsense.
And that their lives are one track, and can't they see how it is all pointless?
But then, my knees give under me. My head feels weak and
suddenly it is clear to see that it is not them but me, who has lost my self-identity.
As I hide behind these books I read, while scribbling my poetry,
like art could save a wretch like me, with some ideal ideology that no one can hope to achieve.
And I am never real; it is just a sketch of me.
And everything I have is trite and cheap and a waste of paint, of tape, of time."

Referring to SP's 'The Bell Jar.'

She walks in the room
And checks out the faces
We think she's all the seven wonders of the world
But there's a sadness
Hidden in the bizarre
Moonlight and madness
Living in a bell jar

She dresses in black
'Cause sorrow is a magnet
Everything comes to her like it was meant to be
But she's frustrated
Leaving things as they are
What she created
Living in a bell jar

She feels so at home
She's never alone
But she's oh so lonely
What is the crime
In knowing your mind
Set it free

Attached to a mirror
In her glass-sided prison
She writes the note that will excuse her from this world
It's complicated
Living in a bell jar
She suffocated
Living in a bell jar

"Wuthering Heights"

Out on the wiley, windy moors
We'd roll and fall in green.
You had a temper like my jealousy:
Too hot, too greedy.
How could you leave me,
When I needed to possess you?
I hated you. I loved you, too.

Bad dreams in the night.
They told me I was going to lose the fight,
Leave behind my wuthering, wuthering
Wuthering Heights.

Heathcliff, it's me-Cathy.
Come home. I'm so cold!
Let me in-a-your window.
Heathcliff, it's me-Cathy.
Come home. I'm so cold!
Let me in-a-your window.

Ooh, it gets dark! It gets lonely,
On the other side from you.
I pine a lot. I find the lot
Falls through without you.
I'm coming back, love.
Cruel Heathcliff, my one dream,
My only master.

Too long I roam in the night.
I'm coming back to his side, to put it right.
I'm coming home to wuthering, wuthering,
Wuthering Heights,

Heathcliff, it's me-Cathy.
Come home. I'm so cold!
Let me in-a-your window.
Heathcliff, it's me-Cathy.
Come home. I'm so cold!
Let me in-a-your window.

Ooh! Let me have it.
Let me grab your soul away.
Ooh! Let me have it.
Let me grab your soul away.
You know it's me-Cathy!

Heathcliff, it's me-Cathy.
Come home. I'm so cold!
Let me in-a-your window.
Heathcliff, it's me-Cathy.
Come home. I'm so cold!
Let me in-a-your window.

Heathcliff, it's me-Cathy.
Come home. I'm so cold!

Tobacco Road (book title)
I was born in a bunk
Mother died and my daddy got drunk
Left me here to die or grow
In the middle of Tobacco Road

Grew up in a dusty shack
And all I had was a'hangin' on my back
Only you know how I loathe
This place called Tobacco Road

But it's home
The only life I've ever known
Only you know how I loathe
Tobacco Road

I'm gonna leave and get a job
With the help and the grace from above
Save some money, get rich I know
Bring it back to Tobacco Road

Bring Dynamite and a crane
Blow you up, start all over again
Build a town be proud to show
Give the name Tobacco Road

Cause it's home
The only life I've ever known
Oh I despise and disapprove you
But I love ya, 'cause it's home

Edgar, interesting that I first heard Tobacco Road by a British Invasion band-The Nashville Teens. I wonder how they got a hold of it?

The Flaming Lips
Jesus Shootin' Heroin

Well, I never really understood religions,
Except it seems a good reason to kill.
Everybody's got their own conceptions,
And you know, they always will.
These days are needles under my skin.
Jesus shootin' heroin.

If there are priests at your party,
And you're playing cards that are numbered,
And you got no reason to think it,
Until your chances are uncovered.
Tell me that I got to believe in,
Jesus shootin' heroin.

The police in new york city,
Chased a boy, right through the park.
In a case of mistaken identities,
They put a bullet through his heart.

I met mary, on the corner with the streetlights.
She asked me if I'd come up to her room.
I told her that I didn't have no money.
She said she had to leave pretty soon.
I decided that I would go in.
Jesus shootin' heroin.

The Flaming Lips
Five Stop Mother Superior Rain (excerpt)

"I was born the day they shot a hole in the jesus egg
Now the rain, it's all so random
What does free will have to do with it at all?
And you can't cry, but
It really don't matter, y'end up cryin' anyway.

My hands are in the air
And that's where they always are
You're f**ed if you do, and you're f**ed if you don't
Five stop mother superior rain"
