Does anyone know how the term "pop music" transformed from a phrase loosely describing music that is popular at the moment to a phrase describing an actual genre of music?

Thank you ahead!

Hey, sg. Welcome to A2K.

I can tell you this, When describing the evolution of music in America, a cycle could be described as:

From folk to Jazz to rock to pop.

Popular music is so named because it is usually the music of the populace. In other words, practically everyone can identify with it, thereby giving it a genre of its own.
