poll
Too limiting for me--fantasy/sci-fi, action/adventure, alternate history, & some non-fiction.
Too limiting a poll for me too. I checked non-fiction, as I read a wide variety of that. I also read literature, that is novels, short stories, plays, and poetry, although I don't read many plays now, and not much poetry. I occasionally read police procedural crime fiction; some of those are well enough written that they might be considered literature.
Categories that you'll find in bookstores separately from literature - categories such as romance, horror, etc. - to me are indicators that the books are written with a sort of sensationalist pulsing and not a lot of attention to the nuances of thoughtful writing. Some works of literature do contain horror, adventure, and romance within their pages, but usually that is just one element within a whole construction of the book.
I know that sounds like a snobby division of books, and know that some books thought of as literature can be quite boring and some that are in the categories I am saying are usually sensationalized can be thought-provoking.
