According to this statistic, http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml... the average American today lives until their late 70s. This depresses because it seems as if I'll have to live into my 80s to beat the average. I'm 21 now, so it would take me about 60 years. However, I also know that statistics can be misleading. So is there a chance that these statistics aren't totally accurate? It would make me really happy if I could beat the average by living into my 60s. I will, right?

@doetwin,
No, the average person in the US will live into their mid to late 70's depending on gender. By the time you get there it could be even later.

@doetwin,
I don't understand why this depresses you. This seems like super news to me!

Yes, these numbers are accurate. Life expectancy in the US has risen dramatically in the past 100 years... from around 46 years in 1900 to about 79 years in 2015. This means that you are far more likely to reach your 80's than ever before.

Now why do you think this is a bad thing?

@maxdancona,
Because that makes it harder for me to live longer than average.

No, it does not make it harder for you to live longer than average. It is just as easy for you to live to age 79 as it was for someone in 1900 to live to age 46.

And even if it did make it harder for you to live longer than average (which it doesn't)... why would you care? The point is that you are very likely to live longer than someone who lived in 1900.

@doetwin,
Well, my dad's 85 and most of his pals in and out of the retirement home are older so you're going to have to get close to 100 to beat the average by the time you hit 75.

On the upside, stats show that the longer you live, the longer you're going to live.

Gotta love that.

@ehBeth,
Well, George Burns wrote a book titled something like "How to Live to be a Hundred" First step was to live to be 99. Kind of obvious, in its own way.
