A Canadian online store wants me provide a copy of passport or I.D when making online purchase. They told me is was their security protocol. Is this a common practice?

@ginabelle1104,
No. If paying by credit card, they submit the number for authorization. When they receive an authorization number, they will be paid regardless on any other requirements. They simply have no reason for this intrusive and unnecessary request, unless you are buying something that otherwise requires ID, such as an age restricted item.

@ginabelle1104,
Find another vendor to do business with.

Is this by chance an online pharmacy you are trying to do business with? If so, they may be requesting proof of residence and your passport is not required for that.
