What program would I have to use to play songs backwards?
You can try the editing equipment at your local access cable company. Are you trying to hear Satanic verses or secret hidden messages?
No I heard about 30 sec of one of my favorite songs and it sounded really nice. I loved it I just can't get the whole thing. It was "Fake Plastic Trees" by Radiohead. I hope there isn't anything Satanic in it.
rip it as a wave file, then open start>all programs>accessories>entertainment>sound recorder
open the file and use the reverse effect, listen to your hearts content

I have heard that backmasking was very popular in the 70's and 80's. The most famous backmasked song I belive is Stairway to Heaven, but there are many beatles songs too i think.
Sounds interesting, I wanna try it, or at least hear something done like that!
An aside: "They're Coming To Take Me Away, Ha-haaa", by Napoleon XIV (1966) had the song backwards on its B-site.
