I keep getting a pop-up from "Gain Publishing", which keeps asking me if I want to install a certain program. First I tried just closing it, only to have it return, sometimes as much as 3 times at each session on the internet. THEN I tried just clicking "no" (I don't want it), but still the bloody thing persists! According to my History log, I "visit" the site each time I say "no'. Confused Question It's webpdp.gator.com

Does anyone know WHAT this site IS & WHY it's so persistent? ... And best of all, how to stop it popping up on my screen so often?

I just had my computer de-bugged & new programs installed, but it's still here, despite all that.

Hey, Msolga. I have zone alarm, a firewall, that asks me if I want to accept certain things. Do you have that? I get the same problem when I look up the lyrics to a song, and don't want to install the song on my pc. I have no idea about that site which you describe, but it sounds tricky. Try restarting your computer the next time.

Letty, wild guesses aren't going to help anyone.

I grow weary of telling people this but if you have no idea what would help with a computer, it's best not to try. The wild guesses on the computer forum end up causing more work and are not helpful.

I know you mean well, but people who have no idea what to do but who don't let that stop them from giving 'advice' are hurting more than they are helping.

msolga,

Gain is a notorious spyware that also goes under the name of Gator.

If you would like to remove it, download, update, and run:

AdAware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

and

SpyBot: http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download

If you need help, let us know.

Thank you very much, Craven. Very Happy I've installed both those programs & am now waiting to see what happens. Spyware! This is a new one to me. Shocked Lucky I choose not to conduct any financial transaction on the internet. Thanks again. I'm very grateful.

Letty

Thank you for trying. I appreciate that. Very Happy Has Craven's advice to me been of any help in resolving YOUR pop-up situation? I hope so.

Letty's problem seems to regular use. She mentioned lyrics sites and those sites frequently just bombard users with popups. So for her, a popup blocker (I happen to recommend the Able2Know toolbar ;-) ) would work fine.

msolga,

You need to run the programs, installing them won't do anything. they are cure programs with only marginal prevention.

Run them and see what they find. If they don't fix it, let us know and we'll keep helping you fight the pest.
