During the summer of 2001, I read a book that I am now trying to remember the title of! It was a humorous British novel (with the feel of Bridget Jones' Diary). It was published in the 90's by a male author.
Unfortunately, I don't remember many details, but here is what I THINK this was correct:
- The main character, a male, lived in a small, messy flat
- I believe the man's occupation was teaching
- I think each chapter started with the time of day
- I recall him often sitting on the phone with a woman that he may not have met before (?), which became a key aspect of the story
Any ideas on what it could be or how to find it would be greatly appreciated!
Sorry. It's the details that make a book findable. Let us know if you remember any - author's first or last name, character's name, town it was set in, anything.
I know that the details are sketchy, but that's exactly what I haven't been able to find it and have needed to go to a forum for help. I picked it up in Brown University's bookstore and thought the book was funny. I can't find the book anywhere in my house now and am frustrated trying to recall what it could have been.
Like I said, the writing style is comparable to that of of "Bridget Jones Diary" or a Jane Green book.
The main character was a guy, probobly around 30 or so. He lived in or around London, though the book mainly took place in his flat. For some reason, the details of a messy apartment stick out in my mind.
There was mention (though limited, believe) of his job as a school teacher.
The novel has a short title and a short author's name (not that that helps much). When I saw the author name "Nick Horny," I thought that could have been the author. However, after looking at the summaries of the books he's written, that doesn't seem to be right.
I found it!
I was searching more on Google.com with my sketchy details to attempt to find it.
I found a website that listed links for "If you like..." The first link was actually had a link for my local library, where I searched for similar books to Jane Green. The author "Mike Gayle" jumped out at me, and after looking at his bibliography, "Mr. Commitment" is definately the book I had read!
Now we'll just find out the accuracy of the few details I offered.
Thanks for the help!
P.S. Here's the link for more links to "If you like..." where you can find ideas for similar books to one you already know you like.

Shoot! I was looking at the other books of Mike Gayle and said "Mr. Commitment."
The one I was really referring to was "My Legendary Girlfriend."
