..dear friends..the other day I defrosted my old fridge [perhaps 15-20 yrs.old]
and soon after, two days ago, I tried to turn on the light bulb and it broke in
my hand..after discarding the bulb, I touched the base and a few sparks flew
..the base is still screwed on..and I cleaned carefully all around near it..my
question: can I leave the base attached, as it is, indefinitely without anything dangerous taking place.I plan to get another fridge--but I'm a slow, older man
and for the time being I'd much appreciate an answer..gratefully, olsfridgeman
@olsfridgeman,
What I'd do if I were you:
1. shut off the refrigerator by briefly unplugging it while you work on it.
2. Use a needle-nose pliers and remove the base from the socket.
(If you can't do that, ask someone younger to do it for you).
3. replace the blub
@Ragman,
I use the same technique. Sometimes you can spread the needle "nose" inside the socket and pull the handles while turning counter clockwise and the piece will start unscrewing. Other times, just gripping the edge of the socket is what works.
I've tried both ways and both ways work just fine.
Edgar offers excellent advice and he's prof handyman and tinkerer, too.
'Course it will take five people to put in the new bulb. One to hold the bulb and four to twirl the fridge around.
