Hosts file not working

Reply Fri 4 Jun, 2004 10:44 am
Ok, here's the problem:
I've got an extensive hosts file for security and speed purposes (over 8000 entries). However, domains in the hosts file are still resolving to their internet servers when I type them (for testing purposes) in the address bar.

Here's the setup:
The entire hosts file is in the 127.0.0.1 format
(127.0.0.1 domain.tld)
with a <tab> instead of a space between the localhost IP and the domain I want null routed.

I'm running win95 fully patched with IE5.5, Crazy Browser, and Mozilla Firefox 0.8. I have the same results on every browser. I am running through a proxy server required by work for safe browsing. I checked an XP box (also fully updated running IE6sp1, CB, and MFF 0.8) and it had the same problem. The hosts file is not redirecting anything.

Any ideas why?

It might be the proxy, or it could be a local dns setting. If you post a hijackthis log we might be able to help.

As expected you are being sent to a proxy. Get rid of the R1 entries if you want to fix it.

Ok, so the proxy is the issue. The only problem is that the proxy is the company's method of safe-surfing.

I had heard somewhere that checking the box to not use the proxy for local addresses may allow the hosts file to work (see the third R1 entry: override).

I do have this option selected but because it's not working I guess it really doesn't help.
