A money safe has a number of drawers. Each drawer has as many dividers as there are drawers. In each divider there are 4 times as many dollars as there are drawers.

Total amount of money in safe - $5,324.

Determine number of drawers.

What is known:

A money safe has a number of drawers.

Each drawer has as many dividers as there are drawers.

In each divider there are 4 times as many dollars as there are drawers.

Total money in safe - $5,324.

Want to know:

Number of drawers.

Let x = number of drawers.

Let d = number of dividers.

Let m = dollars.

Let s = sum.

x = d

4m = x

s = 5,324

How do I proceed from here ?

@Randy Dandy,
To proceed from the question you formulate an equation.

There are n drawers

Each of the n drawers has n dividers

Each of the n^2 dividers contains 4n dollars which in total = $5324

Derive and solve the cubic equation.

@Randy Dandy,
4n^3 = 5324

@knaivete,
4n^3 = 5324
4n^3 /4 = 5324 /4

n^3 = 1331

n = 11

I am not sure if that is correct.

@Randy Dandy,
There are some errors in what you've written that you should know about.

Let s = sum.

x = d

4m = x This should say m = 4x, because m > x.

s = 5,324 This should be a product: d*m*s = 5324.

It's correct. When you get a whole number, that's usually a good sign.
