chatoyant created a thread for me - goodnight pueo- and a few of us have used it to sign off for the day. i wanted to have something for the military personnel who grace this forum, such as myself. and of course anyone can join in. i'll start

taps:

fading light dims the sight,
and a star gems the sky, gleaming bright.
from afar drawing nigh-falls the night.

I can hear that single horn calling and it is beautiful. Salute and goodnight!

Pueo, Taps is always beautifully haunting, as are the lyrics.

Sincere wishes for the safety of all service personnel.

It has lyrics?!

Taps

Day is done, gone the sun,
From the lake, from the hills, from the sky;
All is well, safely rest, God is nigh.

Fading light, dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright.
From afar, drawing nigh, falls the night.

Thanks and praise, for our days,
'Neath the sun, 'neath the stars, neath the sky;
As we go, this we know, God is nigh.

Sun has set, shadows come,
Time has fled, Scouts must go to their beds
Always true to the promise that they made.

While the light fades from sight,
And the stars gleaming rays softly send,
To thy hands we our souls, Lord, commend.

**Was a Girl Scout. Wondered if it would ever come in handy.
Knowing Taps is much better than having to eat off of a Bunson Burner.

there are no "official" words. these are the commonly used lyrics:

Fading light dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright.
From afar drawing nigh -- Falls the night.

Day is done, gone the sun,
From the lake, from the hills, from the sky;
All is well, safely rest, God is nigh.

Then good night, peaceful night,
Till the light of the dawn shineth bright;
God is near, do not fear -- Friend, good night.

pueo--

I hope you are not impuning the veracity of the Glorified Order of the Girl Scouts of the U.S. of A.!!!!

I guess you may trump us, seeing as how you got the statue and everything.

P.S. pueo--
Does this put a kybosh on "Goodnight, pueo."

It certainly does, roger, very nice ones.

Day is done
Gone the sun
From the lakes
From the hills
From the sky
All is well
Safely rest
God is near

Fading light
Dims the sight
And a star
Gems the sky
Gleaming bright
From afar
Drawing near
Falls the night

Thanks and praise
For our days
'Neath the sun
'Neath the stars
'Neath the sky
As we go
This we know
God is near

Ya know, Redheat once dedicated her Abuzz Friday joke thread to me. Sure enough, next day ABUZZOUT, and the whole thing was lost.

Hope I can toss that into this particular discussion

Just an odd thought here ... Taps is traditionally played by a single bugle. I once heard a rendition which started with a single horn, which was joined verse by verse by other horns, which built to a heart-wrenching harmony then retreated the way they had come, leaving a crystaline, haunting, single horn to proclaim the last two verses again alone. A thunderous crashing of cannon climaxed the piece, their smoke pierced and oddly backlit by shards of light from a huge sun setting over a flat horizon beyond a foaming-rollered beach. Beautiful, stirring ... yes. But it was a sad occasion, and, thankfully, long ago. I hope never to see its equal.
