What will happen to hot sandy countries that sell oil for a living...once no one else wants that black goop?
back to wandering from one water hole to the next?

We're a long long long way from that point in time.

When dit does happen some will adjust. Other's will complain that it's a plot by the west to undermine their economies to keep them poor.

If only it could happen...But, as fishin' says, it won't be in our lifetime. It has been said that the oil resources have kept the Arab lands from advancing in other areas--there's been no economic need to. Not a good thing for all concerned.

It'll work - till somebody figures where the electricity comes from.

I've heard people complain that electric and hybrid cars aren't "powerful" enough, so I doubt we'll ever be totally free of gas-guzzlers, at least until there's no longer any option.
And have no doubt, that day will come.
however, I don't see that as a reason for a racist diatribe against nations who currently have an abundance, either.

biodiesel and "water" cars (fuel cells) will take the same basic engines and run a new economy. biodiesel is here and reformed H2 is gonna be available with either methanol or methane as fuel next year. Methanol is made mostly from coal and methane is dump gas and is found all over the planet. We can generate methane by pumping CO2 into sealed coal mines. Its a convenient way to mine the remaining coal pillars.

Ive used biodiesel in my trucks and it smells like potato chips frying. Its a rather pleasant smell that makes one hungry for a snack.

Since you're here in MA this might be on interest to you - A few weeks ago I had the chance to buy an electric LSV (Low speed vehicle). It looks like one of the Mini's you see running around again but it's all electric and has a top speed of 35 mph.

When I called RMV I found out that they aren't legal to operate on the roads here in MA - they won't register it.

I take all backroads for my daily commute (I can't go over 40 mph legally anyway becuase of the speed limits) and something like that would be an ideal commuter car for people like me but this stoopid state won't let anyone operate them! ARRGH!

Yeah, I just bet it does!

I'll be waiting, just like I'm still waiting for hydrogen fusion power plants.

Oh, I've already figured that one out. Place a small device under the plane, set it off, and away she goes.

really, Fishin? I wonder why not? Possibly because even though it's top speed is only 35 mph, idiots would still take it onto the pike. (which would, of course, be extremely hazardous).
I'd like to find out more about that law. Do you have any other info?
Frankly, it's outrageous. How are we ever gonna get vehicles like that into the mainsttream if the registry won't register them because of stupid state laws? Grrr...
I moved again and now I walk to work... sweet!

What is it about the vehicles that limits it's speed, anyway?

oh with straight electric cars its just that they are not very efficient.
and the batteries are a bit heavy. boo.
petrol on the other hand is lite and burns faster than it takes for a politician forget a promise.

but If you have an eye for style. the new hydro-hybrid cars will blow you away.
Majestic...quiet...versatile
yep, looks like this is the real deal.
and it's started already...so with this latest fuel price jump...these babies will be here sooner than you can blink.

Walking to work. Wouldn't that be nice. *sigh*

It's because of the top speed. Under MA Law a vehicle has to be able to reach 55 mph to be registered. I'll dig up the law later for ya.

The speed was a design trade off. There are always trade-offs. You trade carrying capacity, driving distance or speed/power. In this case they limited the carrying capacity and speed to give people the distance.

Hey,needsandwants. Welcome to a2k. I think you're going to fit in real well here. Pardon my negative comments from time to time. I've just been disappointed too often to see only the bright side.

Suzy, I've been driving a Prius (Toyota's hybird) for about a month. It's surprisingly powerful. When I need to accelerate, the gas and electric motors work in tandem, and electric motors have great torque. I wouldn't compare it to a V-8, but it certainly does well compared to similar sedans.
