Did Bubba catch a chupacabra?

A Texas family claims they've captured the elusive "chupacabra," a mythical creature that supposedly attacks livestock.

According to legend, chupacabras suck the blood of cows and goats. Although there's never been real evidence the creature exists, sightings of chupacabras have been reported from Latin America to the southern U.S.

In the back woods of Ratcliffe, a small town in DeWitt County in South Texas, residents are certain they've found the mythical, despicable chupacabra, and this time, it's alive.

Jackie Stock said her husband caught the creature Sunday night.

"He called me to come and look, and I said, 'Bubba, that looks like a baby chupacabra,'" said Stock.

With its hairless back, large claws, countless teeth and ferocious growl, many would say this animal fits the bill.

"I hunted coons for 20 years with dogs and I ain't never seen nothing looks like that right there," said Arlen Parma, who captured the critter.

Parma said one of the biggest signs it's not a raccoon is its growl.

"A coon don't make that noise, or a possum. What makes that noise? I guess a chupacabra does, I don't know," said Parma.

Most people in DeWitt County are convinced this is the elusive chupacabra, but what do wildlife experts have to say?

"The animal in the cage as best I can tell from the view was some sort of a small canine," said Brent Ortego, a wildlife diversity biologist with Texas Parks and Wildlife.

Ortego said a canine can include a coyote, dog, or even a fox. He said the animal most likely has mange, which has caused it to lose its hair. But as for a chupacabra, he thinks otherwise.

"It's never been proven to be a unique species. It was always something out there that allegedly either caused harm or threatened to cause harm to people or their livestock," said Ortego.

Chupacabra or not, right now this little guy is staying at the Stock household, living off a diet of cat food and corn, at least until someone can find out what it really is.

Raccoons make all sorts of noise, some loud and odd.

@bobsal u1553115,
I could see if anything a raccon -- it doesn't look like one to me -- the ears don't seem the same - but perhaps as I've never seen a raccon without fur - you never know how much different an animal looks without its fur.

I agree raccons make all sorts of weird noises - we've had them where I've lived before and they can be mean.

It can't be any sort of canine as is suggested because of the fingers (or what looks like fingers) - those look raccon-like.

@Linkat,
Diseased and ill, an animal will exhibit all sorts of unusual behavior.

@Linkat,
Probably is a chupacabra, in the sense that folks probably saw some creature in a similar state and thought it was an unknown kind of creature instead of a known kind of creature with an unfamiliar appearance.

@Linkat,
I saw this TV interview this afternoon with the woman who has the animal. As well, I saw the animal caged and moving about in the cage in her yard. It's an animal I've never seen before.; Biologist/animal experts are not discrediting the possibility it is as what people are claiming..Chupacabra.

@Ragman,
I looked at the video. At first I thought it couldn't be a raccon with mange - as its face looked too thin and its ears too big. But then again without all that fur would it look that different.

then I saw this article about someone finding a raccoon with mange. It looks similar but not exact... maybe a slightly different species of raccoon or a related animal.

So this hick couple is having Chupie put down. Appears sweet Chupie has scabies. The good news is they are going to have Chupie stuffed and auctioned off on ebay. I can't wait to see what the bidding is going to be like.

Oh ****, I just read this.

That sucks.

There are treatments for scabies.
The animal doesn't belong to them, they found it.
Let it go back and live in the wild where it came from.

@chai2,
Yeah I did find that upsetting - I also to be honest, found it upsetting that they trapped it and kept it in a cage.

It seems to me it was just a sick raccoon. Now they are simply using it for fame and money.

@Linkat,
This is exciting.

The starting bid is for $10,000.
So far it has 0 bids.

The economy shipping is $200. It's being shipped from Fulton, NY.

Gee, you'd think with a starting bid of $10K, they could give you free shipping.
