Cormac McCarthy's The Road? And that doesn't want to make you commit suicide because of the abject bleakness? Though to be fair, it does sound very suitable for the camp fire situation.

i always listen with just one ear bud, i must admit to really paying attention to surrounding noise as the night got darker while listening to that particular book
the Hitchhikers saga was a great listen as the stars twinkled
