Should EMERGENCY Unemployment Benefits be Done Again?

I say no, six years ( seven according to some counts) into the crash we are not dealing with short term problems that might be solved with 6 months of checks. it is time to admit that the lack of work is going to be a problem for many years if not generations, and thus to get any welfare attempt to limit the damage out of the unemployment insurance program, which was not designed for this and is not suited for it either.

The R's are right on this one.

What say you?

I think reports are correct that employers are increasing systematically tossing all job applications that come in from people who have been unemployed for over a year. From our perspective this makes sense, we are not welfare organizations and long term unemployed are bad bets, both because they are not up to speed and because they are out of practice doing the job grind. A great number of the long term unemployed will likely never hold a job again. we need to stop pretending otherwise, it is down right cruel.

We should want to keep the long-term unemployed attached to the labor force until the economy picks up, more jobs become available, and they can find work.

Why? In this instance what is meant by"attached to the labor force" is that they are claiming to make three job applications per week and in return they get a check...this does NOTHING to keep a person able or willing to perform a job if one were to become available, and the deceit that better days are ahead re the job market is demoralizing. After awhile the demand that a person continue to make job searches when there is practically zero chance of them being hired seems like it is a hoop they are forced to jump through by sadists. It would be much more kind to just give them a check, and try to get them ready to live in poverty.
