Don't know where you live, but most likely tree frogs. They were there when you showed up.

They weren't as loud last summer we used to have the windows open and just heard the normal cricket noise. This year they have been so loud it keeps you up. Even the kids can't stand them and complain about them.

I know this is an old thread, but I thought sticks was only used over here in that context.

I thought you said boondocks.

I may be wrong but I think you live in New England.

I imagine it would be more anglicised there than the rest of the country.

I first heard it in California, where most of the people I knew were refugees from the south. I think it's a widely used term.
