Damn! Who sings this song? This song has some kind of grip on me, folks.. so this guy is singing it, but I don't know who and, man, he sounds good. Can you tell me who sings this or what on earth is happening to me..
I googled it with little luck. Help me. I'm breathless.
Wild Goose
Think it was Frankie Laine (sp)?
Dammit Lenny - I am finding references to it on Copernic - and Frankie Laine is mentioned - but no actual elucidations.....
The Cry of the Wild Goose
My heart knows what the wild goose knows
And I must go where the wild goose goes
Wild goose, brother goose, which is best?
A wandern' fool or a heart at rest?
Tonight I heard the wild goose cry
Hanging' north in the lonely sky
Tried to sleep, it warn't no use
'cause I am a brother to the old wild goose
CHORUS;
(Oh, my heart knows what the wild goose knows)
(And I must go where the wild goose goes)
Wild goose, brother goose, which is best?
A wanderiln' fool or a heart at rest?
Woman was kind and true to me
She thinks she loves me, more fool she"
She's got a love that ain't no use
To love a brother of the old wild goose.
CHORUS
The cabin is warm and the snow is deep
And I got a woman sho lies asleep
She'll wake up tommorw's dawn
And find, poor critter, that her MAN is gone
CHORUS
----------------------------------
Let me fly, let me fly, let me fly away
Spring is comin' and the ice will break
And I can't linger for a womank's sake
She'll see a shadow pass overhead
And she'll find a feather 'side her bed
CHORUS
I'm not sure which artist had it first. I know the two hits of it overlapped. Frankie Laine and Tennessee Ernie Ford both did it.
Misti26- It sure was. And I can remember exactly how Frankie Laine sounded when he sang that song!
If you go to my link you will see that both Tennessee Ernie and Frankie did it in 1950.
The Cry of the Wild Goose
Frankie Laine did "Granada" like it was the last thing he´d ever sing.Amazing voice, that guy.Wow wow.
hebba- and the song that most reminds me of Frankie Laine is, the ever popular, "Mule Train"!
Since the question was, Who sang it? and not who sold the most records, I am still correct, since they sang it at the same time. I recall listening to both versions back then. These two guys covered each others songs quite a bit. Tennessee Ernie Ford did Mule Train at the same time Frankie Laine did also.
I guess I'm coming off too argumentive on a thread that's meant in fun. I don't intend it that way. I love both of the artists mentioned here. I know Frankie Laine was the bigger star, but, Ernie Ford sold an awful lot of records of these songs also and it bothers me if he is dismissed as inconsequential.
There is a great fuss made over the fact that white artists used to cover black rhythm and blues songs. Overlooked by most is the fact they also covered country artists the same way. Laine and Ford are a perfect example.
