The Naivety of Tolerance
Nordic countries are 'tolerant' and now there are violent riots. UK politicians espouse tolerance and a man is killed on the street.
If politicians behave as if this country, and our society, is some kind of tolerant Utopia - one that exists in their very nice minds. Then it requires virtually everyone to share that philosophy, and nobody to take up a philosophy or religion that is in any way bigoted.
But in reality we have a society made up of all manner of people, sophisticated and simplistic, erudite and ignorant, self indulgent, selfish, and otherwise.
The job of politicians and government is not to construct instantaneous utopia, but construct a society that works peacefully. It is far easier to construct such a society if it is homogeneous in both culture and philosophy-religion. Especially if the religion involved tends to be bigoted.
The more such philosophies and religions are given free play in society, the more difficult the problem. There will always be those at the edges of religion who do not conform with the passive mean.
A naive politician preaching tolerance, is only preaching to the converted.
If all religions were tolerant, and espoused the altruistic end value, they would effectively cease to be different religiions.

What we need is a new Joe Stalin to keep the buggers in line.

@edgarblythe,
our town church had a living naivety scene this last Christmas. It was kind of like what youd expect from a small town that isn't even on the map

That sounds pretty good to me....

Tolerance doesn't mean sameness -- it means admitting differences and not seeing them as divisive.
