RACE

Are you sure? I would've guessed MACE.

Mace was my first thought too, but I know that comes from nutmeg.
I googled it and could find no connection between mace and ginger root, apart from them both being spices, and then I came across RACE as a word for ginger root.

I also found that mace comes from nutmeg and no connection to ginger root.
I looled up RACE from your advice and came up with (a genus,species,breed, or variety of animal or Plant)
