British have Oxford and Cambridge univs, which they used to tout as the world's best.

He really said that? Well, our top schools are very good. So good, in fact, it can be difficult to say which is best unless you very carefully define 'best'. I expect the same to be true on a world wide basis. I wonder about his definition.

As for technologies, well, the transistor was invented in the US, and Texas Instruments thought it was kind of interesting. The Japanese figured out how to use them in portable radios without the use of vacuum tubes.

You might notice I didn't answer your question.
