Has anyone here read the "Wool" series?

Are they appropriate for read aloud with a 12 year old?

My son and I like to read books together and I'm thinking the "Wool" series might be good but I kind of like to know what I'm getting into.

Any thoughts?

@boomerang,
Haven't read them, but this might be a good place to start. There is a short synopsis of each book and links to articles and interviews about the books.

And here's a link to a wiki devoted to the series. It has many spoilers:

Here's a link to the books and reviews on the Good Reads site that a lot of us on Facebook belong to:

@Butrflynet,
Thanks Butrflynet.

I've read quite a bit about the books and know they're supposed to be good. But that doesn't necessarily make them good for aloud reading or for kids. We just finished "The Age of Miracles" and there were a few parts that made me say "uh oh - where is this going....". Thankfully they didn't pan out into awkward parent/child reading.

And it really wasn't a great read aloud book. The dialogue came off kind of stilted. In the end we both enjoyed it though.

I'm not a big reader of science fiction so I wasn't at all sure about "Wool". I figured Tsar or DJ might have read it and I'm hoping they'll check in.

It is good to see that goodreads gave it good marks! I'm going to investigate that link further!

@boomerang,
Haven't read them selfwise so I can't say if they're worthwhile reads or good for reading aloud.
That aside and said took a look over at Amazon and clicked in the Wool thing and they have it available for the Kindle which I you recall you having gotten for your son recently. Here it is: http://able2know.org/topic/205134-2#post-5220479
okay it's an ipad mini that you picked up with Kindle access.

Partion 1 is available for free which would give you an opportunity to test drive.

link (hopefully) to Part 1:

@Sturgis,
Thanks, Sturgis!

I've ordered the sample for Kindle but I'm not sure how far it goes. Maybe getting book one and reading it for myself first will give me a better idea of whether it will be a good one or not.
