I worked as a cashier in a supermarket where the manager would make a point of coming along the line of checkouts each morning and saying "Good morning, how are you today?" and calling us by name which he read off our name badges. One day I said "Actually, I feel terrible" and he said "Good, good" and carried on down the line.
When I see people I hardly know on the street I smile, they invariably say "How are you?" I say "No, no, How are YOU!?"
Always gets a laugh....
