Out of curiosity, was there a time when religious organizations weren't involved with politics?

I'm not sure about that, but it seems church involvement in politics have been increasing during the past decade or so.
They are tax exempt because they file as nonprofit organizations.
defiantly not unless their bank account is controlled to make sure it's only spent in the non taxed way.

Yep... but not if it's used to buy anything that's isn't " charity " like having stocks and shares - huge amounts of money stashed away in overseas accounts.. expensive palaces for their higher echelons anything, that's not a charity spend.
