"Thou Art the Man" Why did Pennifeather confess?

The title pretty much explains it all. I read this story over and over and still don't understand, that if Mr.Pennifeather was actually innocent of the murder of his uncle, why did he confess? Was it simply the amount of evidence that was seemingly indisputable? Any insight into this?
