Favorite Movie Themes

There is virtually no musical genre in which I can't find songs I like, but as much as I like Mongolian throat singing, I admit to a not-so-guilty pleasure over Movie Soundtracks, and more specifically the main themes.

A few of my favorites are:

The Last of The Mohicans
Legends of The Fall
Princess Mononoke
Young Sherlock Holmes
The Road to Perdition

Anyone else appreciate the genre?

I'm a big fan of Ennio Morricone. This is my absolute favourite, it was my wedding song, and they'll play it at my funeral.

@Ceili,
I love just about anything that features the oboe.

Not in my top ten, but a fine selection.

Not all great themes are from movies, here's one from a brilliant TV series

More End Title music, but this time composed by the director, John Carpenter:

@Finn dAbuzz,
Ennio Morricone, several...

The idea (not the music itself) of "Ecstasy of Gold" is said to be borrowed from part of Wagner's prelude to "Rhinegold" i.e. the violin pat which starts around 1:45 here:

The music comes back on itself like a ring which is a symbol of human greed i.e. the person traversing it never gets anywhere but just keeps coming back to the same place...

I always liked Ennio Morricone, too, although I never realized it.

Here's the Al Capone theme from the Untouchables, a favorite from when I was growing up:

To get the full effect, you have think of this guy on the verge of doing unspeakable things.
The music always gave me chills, and not in a good way.

I've been looking for a great theme from a lousy movie, but can't find any.

They must exist though.

Not all fine pieces are confined to the opening or closing credits:

@gungasnake,
Personally, not a fan of the Morricone spaghetti western themes, but love Wagner, as all neo-nazis must.

Sometimes the music is not all that stand-alone wonderful but in the context of it's movie...

And a break for John Milius from Basil Poledoris.

@Finn dAbuzz,
It's probably no shock to a lot of people here at a2k but I truly love and obsess over movie scores.

On Amazon alone, I own the scores for:
Coraline; Drive; Inception; Lord of the Rings; (YES! High five anyone?) Princess Mononoke; and Waltz with Bashir.

I also own Schindler's List on CD which was my first film score I owned.

One day soon, I'll own a copy of Trevor Jone's score of Michael Mann's The Last of the Mohicans. Also, Ennio Morricone's The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

I love original scores that are epic and ambitious. But I also like the oddball modern score of The Social Network as well which I also own a copy of somewhere.

@tsarstepan,
I was on your other thread about TV themes and mentioned my favorite TV music writer Mike Post.
I jut got done watching the TV series FQRGO(thematically similar(very dark humor) but different than the 96 movie. ANYWAY Carter Burwell did the score for the TV series and, the change from the mvie ws that the opening theme in the movie was resolved in a minor to major accomplished by playing the theme on a harp. In the Tv theme , the dissonance and minor sustained was used throughout. Excellent theme for an excellent series.

Thi has to be an Emmy candidate

@Finn dAbuzz,
Am I alone then in loving the Soundtrack for the movie The Gladiator with Russel Crowe and Joachim Phoenix?

Lisa Gerard is amazing.

@Finn dAbuzz,
I had expected this thread would mention for instance Philip Glass' score for Koyaanisqatsi, Yann Tiersen's score for Amélie and perhaps the score of Bilitis by Francis Lai. For 2012, I would mention the soundtrack for Cloud Atlas (I am actually surprised I can't find a thread about that film, since it seems to divide people so thoroughly on IMDB and elsewhere).
