Krispy Kreme's are buckets of lard. It's the lard that's melting in your mouth. blecccccch. hate that taste and mouth feel.
We have Harvey's and Second Cup kiosks in our Home Depots. I'd rather have those options than donuts.
Hi all --
New Haven -- Medford is the site for their first store. I'm sure additional Boston locations will follow soon, including Harvard Sq.
Dunkin' Donuts was acquired some years ago by the parent company that owns Baskin Robbins ice cream. Often you will see them cross-promoted in movies together, a good example of this is "While You Were Sleeping."
We've always had local donut shops in our town and successfully "banned" Dunkin.' One local proprieter did so well he opened two restaurants, one of which he began serving dinner at night. A friend of mine worked there during high school, and eventually he sold both donut/coffee shops.
The one that remained was bought by another man. He argued against a local man from East Boston who has owned a Dunkin' franchise for years. He said that the town shouldn't let any chains in against a small businessman like himself, etc. Ironic since we've had a McDonald's since the 1970's and a Dominoe's Pizza since the 1980's. He sadly was an ill man/alcoholic and passed away and the business was dissolved by his wife, also a local business owner.
A few years ago the E. Boston Man petitioned again to open in our local "strip mall." He said the donuts would be baked and brought in from his E. Boston store. Again he was refused, neighbors abutting there argued against an increase in trash. Finally a local politican secured a former restaurant that had gone through many incarnations, and there is now, after all that riggamorale, a Dunkin' Donuts in our town and it hasn't hurt any of the local coffee shops -- Most of which only serve breakfast and lunch, and close in the early afternoon.
Dunkin' was started as a canteen in Quincy, Mass. by a friend of our family William Rosenburg. The dunkin' donuts designed with the donut handle to dunk in your coffee. I forget exactly how the story goes, by my grandmother was friend's with a cousin of his, etc. -- Due to some kind of bad feelings, my grandfather was never interested in pursuing the offer of buying one of the original franchises, which Billy offered to his friends and close friends of the family -- A huge, huge mistake. The only other thing I remember about the family is that they had a dirt floor in their house, and Billy left school to go to work and support the family. So there you go -- A little useless trivia about Dunkin' Donuts.
edithdoll: your question turned out to be a fascinating conversation! Thanks! My votes on KK and on DD are "thumbs down". To me, the first is just a puff of sweets, not unlike cotton candy, and the second is just choked with shortening and with glaze. Me, I prefer a great cakelike donut any day. If it has a good powdered cinnamon coating, all the better!
Re the points about packaging: having been employed in the package industry for several years, I automatically calculate what I figure is the cost of the packaging for the total product pricing. When I see too high a ratio of package cost to product cost, I generally pass it by. The boxes of both KK and DD are excessive in cost in regards to product pricing.
