Telomeres and Eternal life, only variable?

I have been reading a lot on the subject matter of eternal life, and the main theme I keep on coming across is that if the telomere length is maintained, the cell would have eternal life. This can't be the only variable though I'm guessing, because it just sounds too good to be true.
So are telomeres really the key to eternal life? Anyone privy to more info. on this subject matter?
