Does anyone know their official state/province song?
I learned this as a child in Colorado:

Where The Columbines Grow

Where the snowy peaks gleam in the moonlight
Above the dark forests of pine
And the wild foaming waters rush onward
Toward lands where the tropic stars shine.
Where the scream of the bold mountain eagle
Responds to the note of the dove,
Is the purple robed west, the land that is best
The pioneer land that I love.

chorus

Tis the land where the columbines grow
Overlooking the plains far below
While the cool summer breeze, in the evergreen trees
Softly sings where the columbines grow.

I heard recently the government was trying to pick one for alberta, these were two of the contenders.

Alberta Bound
Gordon Lightfoot

Oh the prairie lights are burnin' bright
The chinook wind is a-movin' in
Tomorrow night I'll be alberta bound
Though I've done the best I could
My old luck ain't been so good and
Tomorrow night I'll be alberta bound
No one-eyed man could e'er forget
The rocky mountain sunset
It's a pleasure just to be alberta bound
I long to see my next of kin
To know what kind of shape they're in
Tomorrow night I'll be alberta bound
Alberta bound, alberta bound
It's good to be alberta bound
Alberta bound, alberta bound
It's good to be alberta bound

Oh the skyline of toronto
Is somethin' you'll get onto
But they say you've got to live there for a while
And if you got the money
You can get yourself a honey
A written guarantee ta make you smile
But it's snowin' in the city
And the streets and brown and gritty
And I know there's pretty girls all over town
But they never seem ta find me
And the one I left behind me
Is the reason that I'll be alberta bound

Alberta bound, alberta bound
It's good to be alberta bound
Alberta bound, alberta bound
It's good to be alberta bound
It's good to be alberta bound

Four Strong Winds
Ian Tyson

Four strong winds that blow lonely
Seven seas that run high
All these things that won't change come what may
But our good times are all gone
And I'm bound for moving on
I'll look for you if I'm ever back this way

I might go out to Alberta
Weather's good there in the fall
Got some friends that I could go to working for
Still I wish you'd change your mind
If I asked you one more time
But we've been thru that a hundred times or more

Four strong winds that blow lonely
Seven seas that run high
All these things that won't change come what may
If I get there before the snow flies
Things are going good
You could join me if I send you down the fare
But if you wait until it's winter
It would do no good
For the wind sure can blow cold way out there

Four strong winds that blow lonely
Seven seas that runs high
All these things that won't change come what may
But our good times are all gone
And I'm bound for movin' on...

Michigan, My Michigan

A song to thee, fair State of mine,
Michigan, my Michigan;
But greater song than this is thine,
Michigan, my Michigan;
The whisper of the forest tree,
The thunder of the inland sea;
Unite in one grand symphony
Of Michigan, my Michigan.

I sing a State of all the best,
Michigan, my Michigan;
I sing a State with riches blest,
Michigan, my Michigan;
Thy mines unmask a hidden store,
But richer thy historic lore,
More great the love thy builders bore,
Oh, Michigan, my Michigan.

How fair the bosom of thy lakes,
Michigan, my Michigan;
What melody each river makes;
Michigan, my Michigan;
As to thy lakes the rivers tend,
Thy exiled children to thee send
Devotion that shall never end,
Oh, Michigan, my Michigan.

Thou rich in wealth makes a State,
Michigan, my Michigan;
Thou great in things that make us great,
Michigan, my Michigan;
Out loyal voices sound thy claim
Upon the golden roll of fame
Our loyal hands shall write the name
Of Michigan, my Michigan.

Ceili, the Gordon Lightfoot lyrics are cool, just can't imagine they would pass muster in the US of A with mentions of "wimmins". Rolling Eyes Canadians obviously have a better developed sense of humor!

pueo, what language is the song written in, or what language do they speak in Guam. Guam?

Kirsten, Very Happy you know, you're right. Now that I read the lyrics, it's hilarious. I never really paid attention to the second verse, after toronto it's blah blah blah alberta bound, alberta bound.... Twisted Evil Razz Laughing

Here's a list of provincial songs. I haven't heard most of them.

I'm in Washington State.....

We have an obscure State Song (Washington, My Home), but I love our official State Folk Song, "Roll On, Columbia, Roll On"...

from one of our State websites:

In the early 1940s, the federal Bonneville Power Administration produced a movie encouraging rural residents in the Pacific Northwest to electrify their homes and farms with the power being generated by the newly-built Bonneville and Grand Coulee Dams on the Columbia River. As part of the project, BPA hired folksinger Woody Guthrie at $270 for 30 days to write songs for the movie. Guthrie wrote 26 songs, the most popular of which was "Roll On, Columbia, Roll On", an ode to the harnessing of Washington's mightiest river. It was approved as the official Washington state folk song by the Legislature in 1987. The lyrics are as follow:

Roll on, Columbia, roll on
Roll on, Columbia, roll on
Your power is turning our darkness to dawn
So roll on, Columbia, roll on.

Green Douglas firs where the waters cut through
Down her wild mountains and canyons she flew
Canadian Northwest to the oceans so blue
Roll on Columbia, roll on

Other great rivers add power to you
Yakima, Snake, and the Klickitat, too
Sandy Willamette and Hood River too
So roll on, Columbia, roll on

Tom Jefferson's vision would not let him rest
An empire he saw in the Pacific Northwest
Sent Lewis and Clark and they did the rest
So roll on, Columbia, roll on

It's there on your banks that we fought many a fight
Sheridan's boys in the blockhouse that night
They saw us in death but never in flight
So roll on Columbia, roll on

At Bonneville now there are ships in the locks
The waters have risen and cleared all the rocks
Shiploads of plenty will steam past the docks
So roll on, Columbia, roll on

And on up the river is Grand Coulee Dam
The mightiest thing ever built by a man
To run the great factories and water the land
So roll on, Columbia, roll on

These mighty men labored by day and by night
Matching their strength 'gainst the river's wild flight
Through rapids and falls, they won the hard fight
So roll on, Columbia, roll on

It's a great song!!

The Columbia River is really awesome....

Everybody knows Kansas' state song:

Oh give me a home
Where the buffalo roam,
And the deer and the antelope play
Where seldom is heard
A discouraging word
And the skies are not cloudy all day

Home! Home on the Range....

Hi , I was just browsing and saw your quest re Ontario. YES we do have a wonderful song that was written in 1967 for EXPO67, to go with the documentary film called " A place to stand and a Place to grow". Unfortunately I can't find all the lyrics and have been searching for over one hour. Sometimes search sites drive me crazy.
Part of the lyrics:
"Give me a place to stand and a place to grow
And call that land Ontario,
A place to stand, a place to grow, Ontari-ari-ari-o!"

Hope this helps AND if you get all the lyrics please be so kind as to send them to me. Thanks ..transported from Ontario to Alberta
Dorothy Very Happy
