Pine tree problems

We have 2 huge pines that have been damaged by heavy snow the past few winters in Virginia. Several branches have broken while others are dead. Can anything be done to salvage them? Can ivy be planted at the bases to grow up the trunks to at least make them look presentable? I have read where ivy can kill trees.
