According to the latest report, it seems that Asaad could have defected. Any more news on this issue?

@cicerone imposter,
It looks like one of his top military aides has escaped to Turkey.

@Ceili,
Not only that, he was also a very old friend of Asaad - they've been friends since childhood.

@cicerone imposter,
I've not heard anything about it, but do you remember when our prize pillock of as foreign minister William Haig said Gadaffi had fled to Venezuela? This sounds the same.

There has been a top level defection today though.

Quote:
A Syrian general from a powerful family close to President Bashar al-Assad has defected and is on his way to Paris, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius has said.

Mr Fabius said this showed Mr Assad's entourage was beginning to realise the regime was unsustainable.

Brig Gen Manaf Tlas fled Syria via Turkey, his family confirmed.

If confirmed, it would be the highest-level defection since the unrest began in Syria 16 months ago.

Pro-government website Syriasteps said earlier Gen Tlas had made an "escape", adding the move was "insignificant".

Earlier rumours about his possible defection in March proved to be false.

@izzythepush,
Thanks; that's the best update so far. I'm just wondering if this is the beginning of the end for Asaad?

@cicerone imposter,
It could be, or like Churchill said, maybe just the end of the beginning. It could go either way, the BBC just said the defector had fallen out with Assad, and been under house arrest for about a year. So it's not like he's left a hole or anything.

Nature abhors a vacuum! Can anyone guess what could fill any void? Do I hear a balalika playing?

@Foofie,
That would depend on what fills the void. Many would venture to conclude it'll be much better than Asaad.
