@CalamityJane,
Ernie Kovacs was the TV pioneer comedy show. Carson and Steve Allen copied him liberally. Now Letterman and Leno copy his genius. Back in the late '50s and early '60s he invented funny skits, props and effects that are now done with computers.

Speaking of earworms, here's the most famous skit of all of his:

I see I missed a lot of Kovacs, or more likely, didn't get anything.
