On both a lighter & darker note (you'll see what I mean if you read it), I'm suggesting something totally different, if you like fantasy-lit at all: "Homeland", by Robert A. Salvatore. It's not philosophical like the rest (though there certainly are parts that make you think), but it's much darker in nature than, say, Tolkien.
