In the latest episode of retail gone horribly awry, crowds of unruly shoppers across the country fought among themselves, scuffled with police, upended Christmas decorations and broke down doors leading up to today’s release of the most recent Michael Jordan-inspired basketball shoe.
The unrest stretched from suburban Seattle to Jersey City, where a man was stabbed seven times as he waited in line to buy the $180 sneakers at the Newport Centre Mall, police said. The victim, set upon by several teenagers, was recovering at Jersey City Medical Center.
Whether it's going to war against another nation or some sort of a blood feud against the village idiot down the street, I'd normally figure I'd need two things to want to go into harm's way , i.e. a believable cause, and a good chance to win. Somehow or other the latest pair of Air-Jordans doesn't really strike me as a reasonable approach to the "believable cause" part of the thing....
At least one story of someone being killed over Jordan Concord sneakers, one which has inspired around 12,000 people to participate in no less than eight Facebook groups, has turned out to be a hoax. A non-existent person called "Tyreek Jacobs" was alleged to have been killed in Maryland. A picture alleged to be of him is actually a stock (library) photo of a British man, a student aged 17 when the picture was taken in a lesson in 2006 by his science teacher.
@contrex,
The fact that even one person in a country of 250M would even entertain the thought of paying $180 for ANY pair of sneakers is an indication of deep problems, and that's before you get to people standing in lines, getting into single combat and rumbles or ultimately killing eachother over them...
@gungasnake,
If I saw some lying new in their box in the street,
I 'd not bother to touch them.

@OmSigDAVID,
That's about the way I'd view it. I mean, I'd certainly not put them on and lace them up if I thought I was gonna get killed over them...
@OmSigDAVID,
I prefer ordinary leather street shoes.
