The highway department stores sand in piles that are approximately the shap of a cone. What is the volume of a pile of sand if the diameter of the base is 7.0 yds. And the height of the pile is 8.0 yds. Formula of a cone is V=1/3pier^2h is the formula still the same even when there is a diameter?
@Rose5678,
To use the formula, you have to divide the diameter in half to get the radius. So the radius is 3.5 yd and you can just plug into the equation.
@Rose5678,
Don't forget that exponent math comes before multiplication. So find r^2 before you do the rest of the multiplication.
@Rose5678,
And when when you see multiples of "7", it is a hint for you to use pi=22/7 .
@Rose5678,
....that last point would be lost on any student (or so-called teacher) who classified this question under the heading "algebra" , rather than "arithmetic".
